Environmental Policy

1. Our Commitment
At Green IT Recovery Inc., environmental responsibility is at the core of everything we do. We are committed to reducing the impact of electronic waste on our planet by providing safe, ethical, and sustainable e-waste recycling and disposal services throughout the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada.
We believe that every business, school, and household has a role to play in protecting the environment — and we make it easy to do the right thing.
2. The Problem with E-Waste
Electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. Improperly disposed electronics can release toxic materials — including lead, mercury, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants — into soil and groundwater, posing serious risks to human health and ecosystems.
Canada generates millions of tonnes of e-waste annually. Green IT Recovery Inc. is dedicated to ensuring that electronics collected in the GTA are handled responsibly and never sent to landfill or exported to developing countries for unsafe processing.
3. Responsible Recycling Practices
We follow strict environmental standards in all stages of our e-waste processing:
- All collected electronics are sorted, assessed, and routed to certified recycling facilities
- Devices in working condition are prioritized for reuse and refurbishment, extending their life cycle
- Hazardous components such as batteries, toner cartridges, and CRT monitors are handled separately by certified specialists
- Data storage devices are securely wiped or physically destroyed to prevent data breaches
- We work exclusively with recycling partners who meet Canadian environmental standards
- Zero landfill disposal — we do not send any collected electronics to landfill
4. Compliance with Environmental Regulations
Green IT Recovery Inc. operates in full compliance with applicable Canadian and Ontario environmental legislation, including:
- Ontario's Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act (RRCEA) — governing the management and recycling of designated materials including electronics
- Ontario Regulation 522/20 — waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) requirements
- Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) — governing the management of toxic substances
- Basel Convention — we do not export hazardous e-waste to countries with weaker environmental standards
5. Reuse Before Recycling
We follow the waste hierarchy principle — prioritizing reuse over recycling wherever possible:
- Reuse: Functional devices are refurbished and donated or resold, extending their useful life and reducing demand for new electronics
- Repurpose: Components and parts that can be extracted and reused are separated for secondary markets
- Recycle: Only materials that cannot be reused or repurposed are sent to certified recycling facilities for material recovery
- Dispose: A last resort — and only through approved, regulated disposal channels
6. Carbon Footprint Reduction
We are committed to minimizing the carbon footprint of our operations:
- Pickup routes are optimized to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions
- We consolidate pickups across nearby locations to maximize efficiency
- We are actively working toward transitioning our fleet to low-emission vehicles
- Our offices and storage facilities follow energy-efficient practices
7. Community & Education
We believe that environmental change starts with awareness. Green IT Recovery Inc. is committed to educating individuals and organizations about the importance of responsible e-waste disposal:
- We work with schools and educational institutions to promote e-waste awareness
- We support local community recycling initiatives across the GTA
- We provide guidance to businesses on building sustainable IT asset disposal programs
- We offer certificates of recycling to clients who wish to demonstrate their environmental commitment
8. Transparency & Reporting
We are committed to transparency in our environmental practices. Upon request, corporate and institutional clients may receive:
- Certificates of responsible recycling and data destruction
- Asset inventory reports detailing items collected and their disposal method
- Environmental impact summaries estimating the positive impact of their recycling efforts
9. Continuous Improvement
We are dedicated to continuously improving our environmental performance. This includes:
- Regularly reviewing and updating our environmental practices and policies
- Seeking certification and partnerships with recognized environmental bodies
- Investing in better technology and processes to maximize material recovery rates
- Listening to feedback from our clients and the communities we serve
